This past Friday, Bowdoin showcased all the acappella it has to offer. Six groups performed for friends, family, and a crowd comprised mostly of freshmen, many of whom were listening to acappella for the very first time.
Almost an hour had passed before the Meddies would be ready to sing, and given the fantastic performances from the groups that preceded them, it was surprising that the audience wasn't exhausted by the endless "dooos" and "aaaaahs" when the Meddies scurried onto the wooden stage of the Chapel.
In fact, the Meddies were welcomed by loud and enthusiastic screams, cheers, and applause from a crowd that filled all the seats, every inch of the aisle, and available space at the entranceway.
The Meddies couldn't have been more fired up, and when Chris Li, the music director, gave the pitch for our first song, we were sweating with excitement (probably also a result of the sauna of a room that we were in).
Luke Mondello sang the Meddies' rendition of 'Fly Me to the Moon', inviting the crowd to a romantic getaway to space to play on Jupiter and Mars, melting hearts as his voice echoed throughout the Chapel.
The last and final song of the evening was put in the hands, or rather the voice, of George Aumoithe who sang a newly arranged version of a Meddie favorite, "Because the Night." Wow! George knocked the song out of the park/chapel with his energy, passion, and dance moves. That song has always been a crowd-pleaser, and last night seemed to be no exception.
Overall, the concert was a great success except that not every Meddie could be on stage last night. The group certainly missed Louis Weeks and Brian Wu, two junior Meddies currently studying abroad. The group is counting down the days for their return.
Until then, there are some positions in the group to be filled. What comes next is one of the most exciting times of the year for the Meddies. It is now time to select new members who will be a part of this group not just for the next four years, but for the rest of their lives.
Recruiting begins this Monday, and a week from now the names of our new Meddies will be announced. So stay tuned everyone to find out who these few gentlemen will be!
